Depression and its associated factors among elderly people of old age homes and community of Kathmandu district, Nepal: a comparative study

Background: Depression is a common public health problem among elders worldwide and associated with high morbidity disability. This study aims to assess depression its factors elderly in old-age homes community of Kathmandu district.Method: A comparative cross-sectional recruited 122 from district. was measured using the Geriatric Scale-short scale (GDS-15). Socio-demographic medical history collected semi-structured questionnaire. We utilized bivariate logistic regression association each variable. Results: The prevalence 74.6% 41.8%. found that residing at old age were four (OR=4.087; 95% CI=2.373-7.038) times more likely have than those community. Age be respondent both settings. In homes, not receiving allowance, bad perception life, social relation, having chronic disease, lack care family, stress weeping as coping strategy depression. community, stress, non-involvement family decision making, feeling neglect, dysfunctional capability, lesser monthly income had positive relation depression.Conclusion: highly prevalent Nepalese elderly, higher burden living homes. emphasizes need for screening initiate early intervention measures.
